The Texas A&M Maritime Academy is pleased to announce that Capt. Don Vandelinder has been named Commandant of Cadets.

After graduating from Texas A&M Maritime Academy in 1993, Capt. Vandelinder launched a career in the offshore drilling industry that has spanned more than 32 years and five continents. His experience includes assignments on moored semi-submersibles and drillships, as well as leadership roles in both U.S. and international shore-based management. Most recently, Capt. Vandelinder served as Master and Offshore Installation Manager aboard one of the world’s most advanced drillships.

“We are excited to welcome Capt. Vandelinder back to campus,” said Col. Michael E. Fossum ’80, Vice President of Texas A&M, Chief Operating Officer of the Galveston Campus, and Superintendent of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy. “As a Texas A&M Maritime Academy graduate, Capt. Vandelinder understands the mission and is well-positioned to lead, mentor, develop, and inspire our cadets.”

Captain Vandelinder’s connection to the sea – and to Galveston – began early. As a young teenager, he volunteered as a crew member aboard Galveston’s historic sailing ship Elissa.

Anchored by a deep commitment to public service and continuous lifelong learning, Captain Vandelinder also holds certifications as a Texas firefighter and Advanced EMT.

Captain Vandelinder will assume his duties as Commandant of Cadets on April 1, 2026.
