Aggies Lend A Helping Hand Through The Big Event

The yearly service project represents the Aggie Spirit in Galveston
|

On March 22, hundreds of Sea Aggies woke up early, rolled up their sleeves and dedicated their Saturday to volunteering with The Big Event. Every year, students from Texas A&M University at Galveston take part in this quintessential Aggie tradition here in Galveston. The one-day event dedicated to service to others offers students a unique opportunity to give back to their community during the country’s largest student-run single-day of volunteering.

Students gathered early Saturday morning to check in for The Big Event

The Big Event exemplifies each of the Aggie Core Values – Respect, Excellence, Leadership, Loyalty, Integrity and Selfless Service, and Aggies have been lending a helping hand for over forty years through the event. Since its inception in College Station in 1982, this tradition rooted in selfless service has grown to 130 Big Events across the nation.

In Galveston, students can be found working on a wide variety of service projects, including painting fences, picking up trash, planting trees and more. This year, The Big Event served 25 local sites, including beaches, churches, schools and museums, giving students the opportunity to say “thank you” to the community. For local residents, organizations and business owners, The Big Event can have a big impact, and many look forward to the event each year.

The work done at The Big Event can have a lasting impact, often addressing needs that otherwise might go unmet. From new trees to revitalized homes to cleaner shorelines, the results are tangible.
