COLLEGE STATION, – Rear Admiral Robert Smith III U.S. Navy (retired), formerly senior vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas with responsibility for Houston-based operations, was selected by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents to serve as a vice president at Texas A&M University and president/chief executive officer at Texas A&M at Galveston on April 4. Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin, who held the top position at Galveston from 2005 until 2009, said Smith’s strong financial, economic and budgetary background, as well as his proven record of effective leadership and strategic management, were important factors in his selection.

“After having served as a Texas A&M University vice president and chief executive officer for the Galveston branch campus for four years prior to becoming president of Texas A&M, I am very much aware of the leadership skills required as well as the responsibilities and demands placed on the individual who has the privilege of serving in this important position,” Loftin said. “Smith’s credentials and outstanding record of service to our state and nation are impressive. He offers a unique blend of strong financial management and leadership skills, unwavering commitment to public service and familiarity with the Galveston campus and its operations.”

“Smith was selected following an extensive nationwide search that produced a distinguished pool of qualified applicants. I am confident that we have identified the right person to help us continue to enhance the marine-oriented Galveston campus as it moves forward with its tremendous teaching and research programs.”
