The Gulf Research Program (GRP) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine today announced 11 grant awards totaling $341,283 to assist in the recovery of Gulf Coast scientific research efforts impacted by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

On Wednesday, April 4th, Texas A&M University at Galveston professor, Dr. Jessica Labonté, spoke at the Marathon Petroleum refinery in Texas City at a “Lunch and Learn” event to raise awareness of local environmental issues.

A team of six employees from Texas A&M University at Galveston will receive a 2018 President’s Meritorious Service Award from Texas A&M University in the team category.

By the time Harvey hit the Houston and Galveston area, it had ceased to be the monstrous category 5 hurricane that seemed to erase the entire Gulf of Mexico from radar maps.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently announced awards totaling more than $1.2 million to support 13 research projects throughout the Texas A&M University System whose aim is to understand the effects of natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey.

Hurricane Harvey left its mark on much of the Texas coast, leaving at least $100 billion in damages, but it very likely worsened a problem that has been plaguing the coast for years – beach erosion.
