TAMUG Spring 2013 commencement
TAMUG to hold spring commencement ceremony on May 11.
— More than 170 students representing Texas A&M University at Galveston are slated to receive diplomas during spring 2013 commencement at 9 a.m., May 11 (Saturday) at the Exhibit Hall Galveston Island Convention Center. The center is located at 5600 Seawall Boulevard at the San Luis Resort. Commencement parking will be available at the Galveston Island Convention Center garage. Access to lower and upper level garage parking is located at the entrance at 57th Street. Overflow parking can be accessed at the Hilton Hotel parking lot on 56th Street. Additional parking is available on the sea wall and valet parking is available at the Hilton Hotel. Parking in other lots could result in towing.
Dr. Brett P. Giroir will be the keynote speaker. Giroir is the former director of the Defense Sciences Office at DARPA and chair of the Chemical and Biological Defense Panel for the Threat Reduction Advisory Committee for the U.S. Department of Defense. Currently serving as Texas A&M University System vice chancellor for strategic initiatives, he leads the Texas A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing, a public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The center enhances the nation’s emergency preparedness against emerging infectious diseases, including pandemic influenza, and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.
Gioir holds Texas A&M professor appointments at Colleges of Medicine and Engineering, the Bush School of Government and Public Service and the Baylor College of Medicine. He received his undergraduate education at Harvard University and medical training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is the recipient of the Texas A&M System Award for Innovation and the U.S. Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service.
Following Giroir’s address, students from Maritime Studies, Marine Biology, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Fisheries, Marine Sciences Marine Transportation, Maritime Administration, Maritime Systems Engineering, Ocean and Coastal Resources and University Studies will receive diplomas from Rear Admiral Robert Smith III, president and CEO of Texas A&M University at Galveston.
During the ceremony, several students will be recognized. They include honor graduates, degree candidate veterans, George P. Mitchell Society Board of Visitors Award recipients for outstanding achievement in classrooms and laboratories and student activities and an Edwin Eikel Outstanding Student Award for leadership and Edwin Eikel character traits.
Naval Reserve Officer Trainings Corps and Strategic Sealift Officer degree candidates will be recognized at commencement after their commissioning into the U.S. Navy as Ensigns during a ceremony at 11 a.m. on May 10 (Friday) on the bow of the Battleship Texas at the San Jacinto Battleground Historic Site. The site is located at 3527 Battleground Road in LaPorte, Texas.
