Summer Sea Term

Texas A&M Maritime Academy Hosts Fort Lauderdale Event on TS Kennedy

|

On June 13, the Texas A&M Maritime Academy hosted another successful event, this time in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with free festivities onboard the 540-foot training ship, TS Kennedy. The public was invited to tour the ship and sample ice cream as they learned about the importance of marine, coastal and maritime education and research. The event was co-hosted by Texas A&M’s Galveston Campus, a hub of international excellence in the blue economy and home to the academy.

Though Fort Lauderdale experienced significant stormy weather in the last week, the event managed to avoid the rain and all attendees stayed safe and dry throughout the open house-style function.

Texas A&M Maritime Academy students, faculty and staff arrived in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, June 11 as part of their annual summer semester at sea, known as summer sea term. They departed Fort Lauderdale on June 14 and are now en route to Quebec City, Quebec. The academy will then dock in Boston, Massachusetts and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before returning back to Galveston. This vital training at sea is part of the required curriculum for Texas A&M Maritime Academy students seeking their U.S. Coast Guard license in academic programs including marine transportation, engineering, biology and science, preparing them to lead the blue economy.
