Texas A&M University at Galveston reports dramatic increases in enrollment for Fall 2013
Texas A&M University at Galveston, which attracts students worldwide who are interested in marine and maritime programs, reports a record enrollment of 2,174 for Fall 2013. Students from 45 states and 28 countries contributed to an 8 percent increase over the Fall 2012 enrollment and a 34 percent increase in enrollment during the past five years. The most dramatic enrollment growth was in the Texas A&M University Maritime Academy and the university’s graduate programs.
“I believe this is due to the increased awareness that our graduates are in high demand for lucrative marine and maritime careers,” said Rear Admiral Robert Smith III, chief executive officer. “Graduate students find the institution’s faculty members are the world’s top experts in their fields.”
With 502 cadets, the maritime academy increased its enrollment by 22 percent over last year. In graduate programs, enrollment of those seeking master’s degrees increased by 76 percent, while those pursuing doctoral degrees increased by 34 percent.
Dr. Donna Lang, vice president for Academic Operations, Texas A&M University at Galveston said it is an exciting time to be on campus. “Whether they arrive as new freshmen, transfer students or graduate students, we are honored to be a part of their education,” she said. “It looks like the start of a great year.”
Texas A&M University at Galveston is a special purpose institution celebrating fifty years of excellence. The university offers nationally recognized and accredited degrees related to ocean and coastal industries, maritime endeavors and the military. Its ten undergraduate and three graduate degrees and one doctoral degree prepare students to work as scientists, engineers, business and transportation professionals, in research laboratories, field expeditions, shipping enterprises and energy industries. Its maritime academy trains cadets for careers as commercial mariners and naval or merchant marine officers.
